I have been watching Julien Absalon from afar for a few years now and after growing in an era full of great mountain bikers I was dubious as to weather this guy was the real deal but surely now he has proved to me and everyone else that he really is the best xc mtb ever!?

I have no doubt that he is good, he is very good at chosing his day well, rather like Fabian Barel in the downhill. But he is not un beatable, I dont think the standard in World cup/ Olympic level XC is that high at the moment.

Whether (weather is the wind rain and elements noodlemeister ;-)) Absalon is the best ever is difficult to say in my opinion. I don't agree with brodie that the XC is not at the highest level at the moment. The technology and courses and speeds have all changed. Faster bikes can mask lower performance but it also pushes the envelope and technical skills have to go up to match. I know you hear lots of stuff about how the 'old skool' riders rode courses tougher than today on rigid bikes rah rah ya de ya! If you could shadow play one of those guys versus one of the top guys today around a tough course like Dalby this weekend I think you would see a huge gap. Who's best? I think you can only be the best of your time and beat all put before you. Absalon has done that and is clearly the best out there for now. Will Stander get there soon? I think so, Liam a false dawn? Unfortunately I think so again. Whilst Oli and Nick Craig are legends and keep the soul in UK racing.

I think Absalon is one of the best XC racers ever, but best mountain biker ever? No.

Nico Vouilloz has to be a contender with 7 rainbow jerseys and 16 world cup wins. Anne-Caroline Chausson is also up there with 12 downhill rainbow jereys, 4 dual slalom and 3 BMX plus god knows how many world cup wins.

I think though it would have to be Jon Tomac. The man won world cups in downhill and XC in the same weekend as well as the mammoth mountain rebok eliminator and kamakaze downhill. LEGEND.
