If you watch the first video in the link above you will see hat the 1989 UK MTB Championships was sponsored by Carlsberg, commentated on by Phil Liggett, was on TV and filmed from Quad bikes and helicoptors!

What happened?

Why have we gone backwards and what can we do to bring back that kind of media coverage to our sport? You cant even get a small result section in a national newspaper these days!

I'd luv to see our racing like that. I think the first step would be to improve spectator numbers. I think if the organisers put posters up weeks before the event goes ahead, we'll get outside of the sport spectators all wanting to see a spectacle. However, I think that if it was advertised a few quid to get in, rather than free, then potential spectators will think that they are paying to see something worth watching! After all, quite often we have commonwealth games gold and silver medalists going head to head......I think that would be worth £3 a car to get in!?!? Once the series is generating regular outside spectators, then sponsors have a reason to advertise, and also the bigger the spectacle for TV coverage! I think it would be money well spent to get a few hundred A4 posters printed before the start of every season, and put around the local towns for every round! Loads of people own a bike and even more people have nothing to do, but they cant make the decision as to weather or not they are going to watch the 'British Mountain Bike Series this weekend' if they dont know its there in the first place!
