With some fantastic opening results at the Tour Down Under have Sky proved that they are ready to compete with the big boys?

With the announcement of teams such as Astana and Lance Armstrong racing alongside the Halfords team at this years Tour, does it mean that Ireland now has a better Tour than Britain?

I thought that they may be lacking abit of space for a world cup, but I'm sure that when the event goes ahead we'll be pleasently suprised at how it turns out. I rather Dalby than fort Bill, more variety in the course and much less of a bit*h to get too! Stroll On!

I'd luv to see our racing like that. I think the first step would be to improve spectator numbers. I think if the organisers put posters up weeks before the event goes ahead, we'll get outside of the sport spectators all wanting to see a spectacle. However, I think that if it was advertised a few quid to get in, rather than free, then potential spectators will think that they are paying to see something worth watching! After all, quite often we have commonwealth games gold and silver medalists going head to head......I think that would be worth £3 a car to get in!?!? Once the series is generating regular outside spectators, then sponsors have a reason to advertise, and also the bigger the spectacle for TV coverage! I think it would be money well spent to get a few hundred A4 posters printed before the start of every season, and put around the local towns for every round! Loads of people own a bike and even more people have nothing to do, but they cant make the decision as to weather or not they are going to watch the 'British Mountain Bike Series this weekend' if they dont know its there in the first place!

With Kabush and Byberg taking their maiden wins at the last WC in Bromont, is this a sign that the king is about to have his crown taken away?

Are there any contentious ones in here? No Junior Woman present! Liam may have a chance of a podium running on good form at present.

http://new.britishcycling.org.uk/mtb/article/mtb20090713-Retrospective--British-Mountain-Bike-Championships-0

If you watch the first video in the link above you will see hat the 1989 UK MTB Championships was sponsored by Carlsberg, commentated on by Phil Liggett, was on TV and filmed from Quad bikes and helicoptors!

What happened?

Why have we gone backwards and what can we do to bring back that kind of media coverage to our sport? You cant even get a small result section in a national newspaper these days!

Im thinking of converting to tubeless or even tubs from tubes and I have to say im not convinced by either method yet, tubs require a lot of money as id HAVE to get carbon wheels (this would not please the wife!) but then tubeless... I dunno... I keep hearing too many moans about them, which tyres go on which rims with what sealant?!?! ARGGHH! And are they easy to get on the rim? Can you use a cannister to inflate? So many questions unanswered and so complicated!!!

...maybe i should just stick to old fashioned tubes!?

I think that is a dissapointing result for Ruby. She started 7th on the grid and there were only 22 people finished all 5 laps!

I have a view that ruby is very talented and yet when racing in the UK the strentgh of ladies racing is so weak that she often races alone or with only one or two competitors. Unless BC get her racing the domestic races at Elite level she will never get the competition she needs and will waste 2 years in the Juniors. Then when she goes to any International races it will be a shock. We'll end up losing her to Track and Road........Or is that BC's masterplan?

There is something not too dissimilar in Wales this year called the Slick N Knobbly, it sounds like a good concept and could be a great day racing. i'd like to know more about it. Probably needs to be a spring/summer event because of the road section. Could make a great challenge event (road v XC)

I don't think the sport really wants to sort out the problem. Every year the Tour starts and we all wait. Already this year there is speculation that several Rabobank team riders have given testament recently on a case. Why would they be testifying?? If anything is uncovered I geuss Rabobank with withdraw them. And so it starts.....

How about an event (possibly in Wales, Corby, if your watching?) that combines the elements of our sport that seem to be getting closer together with riders switching between codes all the time. You don't see many modern DH riders doing XC seriously or Vice Versa but there are loads of roadies doing XC and MTB'ers doing Road. How about a triathlon event. Start with a short course XC race (1hr), spectator friendly up and down, in and out course, transition onto road bikes for 50K road race or Crit type course, and finishing with a 50k Enduro. Would you get big fields, could it attract sponsors and good prizes?

She fell off a bit easy at the olympics though. it will be interesting to see if someone raised on reasonably groomed BMX tracks and then on the track will take to some of the gnarlier, rough and tumble courses on 4X.

Do you think it would be an ending for Lance? He wants to make millions for his charity, I could see him doing another before turning to politics and becoming Texan Governor. Basso has no hope, Menchev will get kicked off. Hushovd is never going to beat Mancman in a sprint.
At this rate it could be a 1-5 of Astana riders unless they get off the fence.

It was a real shame to see our ****y little sprinter from the Isle of Man and his team totally miscalculate the gap they let the breakaway build yesterday, Costing our ****y little friend his third win........what a shame! Still at least his custom purchase of all green kit wasn't in vain...........tool!
