At 22 Burry Stander is living every cyclists dream, second in the world rankings,
in the form of his life and riding for top Pro Mountain Bike team Specialized. He
currently leads the under 23 world cup series, came 2nd in Andorra last year and
it seems that South Africa have a potential world champion not too far away.
When he's not out training or racing, he loves nothing more than chilling at the
beach or catching up with episodes of Top Gear! We caught up with the coolist guy
in mountain biking!

You are currently 2nd in the world rankings at just 22 years old, what has made this
season so successful?
My career internationally has been all about progression. I showed some promise
as a junior but its taken me 3 years in world cup competition to get to the top
10.This year it has pretty much been the same thing. I’m on an awesome new team
(specialized factory) and I’ve consistently improved my training regime and consistently
performed at the world cups.
What does it feel like standing on the podium at a world cup?
It’s a feeling I dreamt of for 11 years. Getting there last year was incredible
and standing on it still is quite unbelievable. I still have to pinch myself.
Has being so successful changed your life in any way?
I'd say I’m a bit happier and it’s made life easier but otherwise no. I will never
be content and will always push to improve. I also know that I am very fortunate
for the talent I have and I don’t take anything for granted!
You are now with Specialized, what is Cristoph Sauser like to go out on a ride with?
Well it depends. If it’s an easy ride we chat and have a few laughs along with Todd
Wells our other team mate. He is very experienced and always has a good story to
tell. If it’s a hard workout then its hell. It’s like an all out race!

What do you consider your greatest professional achievement?
2nd at the Andorra world cup round last year and also just the fact that ive achieved
my dream of being a pro mtb'er.
Have you made any sacrifices along the way and have they been worth it?
I gave up a lot of my social time in school but looking back, it wasn’t that much
to give up for what I have now. I get to play all day long!
What is your ultimate goal in cycling?
World and Olympic champion. I think it’s what all riders should strive for.
If you weren’t a cyclist what would you be?
I have no idea. I've been cycling since I was 10 and I never considered anything
else.
What are your hobbies outside of cycling?
Cars, electronics, the beach and going out for a good night on the town is always
fun.

Who is your all time favorite rider?
Difficult question. Won’t name a current rider so id say Ned Overend. He is a legend
and yet so down to earth and funny.
How do you chill between races?
We watch a lot of sitcoms on our laptops and practice our accents for the current
place we are racing at. Basically a lot of time doing nothing...
Starbucks or Costa?
The buck, Costa what?
Last track you listened to on your iPod was?
Chamillionaire - That's you
Where would you go on honeymoon?
Skiing in the Alps or Hawaii
If you could invite any 5 people past or present to your dinner party who would they
be?
Ricky Bobby, George Bush, Nelson Mandela, Vince Vaughn, Lil Wayne
Describe yourself in 3 words?
