Watch Billy-Joe in his latest public appearence for Kent TV

Billy Whenman You have just had your biggest win to date in the London National Criterium, How did it feel to cross the line first in front of such a huge crowd?

At 1st I thought I had left my sprint to late, as Liam had a 200-yard lead on me into the last corner! So to pull 200yards out of the bag and get myself a bike length in front, well apart from wining my 1st national road race, and standing on that top spot in front of such a big crowd, Words cant explain it!! It’s Amazing! You know you’ve done your days work!!

With such a high profile win and the recent Television coverage, surely you are now well on your way to the top, what is your ultimate goal in cycling?

I wouldn’t say that the television coverage has gained me anything really, but definitely the training I have done, has had a huge impact on the results I have achieved this year, my long term goal is to medal in the 2012 Olympics in London and to Win the 2016 Olympics!

You recently had a call up to ride for Great Britain in the Mountain Bike Tour De France, how did that go?

Yeah after my podium in the National Championships I received a call from Team Great Britain, and was selected to go ride the MTB Tour de France. Day 1 was a Team Time trial Which we won, so that was great! to win a stage of the Tour De France, it gives you a feeling of what it would be like to win a Road stage ! After a few days of punctures due to big flints! I was placed in the top 10 overall, so overall it was a good Tour.

How difficult is it to combine racing on and off road throughout the season, do you have a preference to either?

It isn’t difficult at all, all of my training is done on the road ! I ride my bike maybe a few days before a mtb race and that’s it, that’s just to make sure it is set up and works fine. I cant say I have a definite favourite, I like the road, but mtb is so much fun ! if I had to make a choice of the 2 it would have to be mtb just because its more fun.

Billy Whenman You have been unlucky on the Mountain Bike front this season; do you ever find it hard to stay motivated when things don’t go your way?

Yes I haven’t had luck on my side this year, however nothing de-motivates me !! rain snow sun mud dirt dust sand hills flat broken bike working bike crash or what ever nothing de-motivates me, if something doesn’t go my way I go away think why It went wrong, what I can do to improve then I do these thing to improve and go back and do it again and again till it is perfect! A example would be the day before the London Road race, I did a local crit and didn’t use my head, used to bigger gear and had my tires to hard! I got a kicking !! I went home, layed everything out got it sorted, went to London the next day, used a easier gear, had the race planned in my head, and had my tires set correctly, and got the result at the end of it. So nope don’t get de-motivated..

What has been the toughest race you have ever taken part in?

Toughest race to date I have done would have to be either the 24Hour Mountain Mayhem which was a killer just because it was the speed of a XC Race, but lap in lap out and didn’t sleep, but the 4th NPS in Shropshire! Wow that was a killer !! I would say that was harder I guess.. took me a few days to recover.

Have you ever had any bad crashes and does it make you think twice about riding fast?

Ive got 13 Screws and 3 plates in me, ive broken my leg, ankle, collerbone, wrist (4 times), fingers, ive broke a fair few bones ! and it doesn’t make me think about riding fast at all…isn’t that why we have the NHS ?

What’s 2009 got in store for Billy Whizz?

2009 has a few changes for Billy Whizz, you will have to wait and see !

Favourite race to watch?

Any downhill race or the Tour de France

Marin MTB Most important person in your cycling career?

The most important people in my life are my Mum & Dad, without them I wudnt have a roof over my head, a bed, food drink or even be able to get to races! So Thanks Mum & Dad

Favourite film?

Ummmm…the funny ones?

If you weren’t a cyclist, you would be….

A Dare Devil, im not sure to be honest, have never thought of doing anything apart from riding my bike.

If I could marry anyone it would be…

That really nice girl?

The best part of my body is….

I'll let you be the judge of that one….

I love cycling because…

There is nothing better than hacking through woods flat out whizzing by trees and off drops and flying through the air and stepping up on that top podium!! you cant get that feeling by kicking a ball !!
